Director Sohum P Shah – the man behind films like Kaal and Luck, is all set for the release of his third theatrical offering – Kartam Bhugtam. Starring Shreyas Talpade, Vijay Raaz, Madhoo and Aksha Pardasany, the psychological thriller is deeply woven around the immutable laws of karma and destiny.

While promoting the film, the filmmaker spoke to Bollywood Bubble and got candid about actors being typecast in the industry. He also spoke about his Luck actor, Imran Khan and whether he would love to work with him again.

Sohum P Shah on working with Imran Khan

Talking about working with Imran Khan again if he makes a comeback, the director said, “Why not? He’s a lovely person. I had a fantastic time making ‘Luck’ with him. We had a very good journey because he was young, very energetic, and he wanted to explore different genres.”

Sohum continued, “But he was not very accepted in the action genre. What I know from the reviews (I came across) all these years is that people didn’t like him doing those action films… but I mainly make thrillers and action… I don’t see myself making very mushy mushy love stories so I don’t know… We don’t know what will come in future. But he’s a lovely person. I had a great time working with him.”

Sohum on actors being typecast

During the same conversation, Sohum also got candid about artists being typecast as certain actors – Shreyas Talpade as a comedian, Imran Khan as a lover boy, and how he manages to have them play completely different characters in his films (Shreyas and Imran play serious roles in Kartam Bhugtam and Luck, respectively. He said, “I think everything that we do is learning from somewhere. So these credits I really want to give Ram Gopal Varma whom I assisted. I imbibed the right things from the right people so that shock value, or surprise value… So many good actors like Arshad Warsi, Riteish Deshmukh, and Shreyas Talpade, they are all known (for comedy).”

He continued, “See, it is our industry which sorts them as comedians or comedy actors – it’s very unfair for an actor. The potential that you see Shreyas doing on Pravin Tambe (Kaun Pravin Tambe?), he’s not got the due for that film, but it’s a fantastic film. Iqbal. Yeh sab comedy ke nahi hai. I think somewhere one has to push that envelope and take that risk. Humme pata hai ki uss aadmi mein woh tone hai, woh actor hai. If you only keep making him do comedy then he’ll also get exhausted.”
